Underworld is arguably the best porn movie of 2013. The film, which is directed by Brad Armstrong and stars jessica drake, is chock full of some of the most amazing visuals that you will ever seen in any adult flick. Leading up to the 2014 AVN and XBIZ Awards shows, Underworld is hands down the favorite to be the biggest winner at both of those award shows. And after watching the movie, I have to say that the movie absolutely lives up to all the hype and is deserving of the praise that’s being heaped upon it from all corners.
What I liked about Underworld…
The best thing about Underworld is how impressive it looks. Yes, this is a porn movie and I understand that set and costume design aren’t necessarily at the top of the list for things that most people look for in their smut. But the attention to detail paid by Brad Armstrong when putting this movie together makes it something special. The costumes and scenery work together to create a type of porn movie that you have never seen before.
But please don’t think that Underworld is some sort of high-minded art project. The movie has more hardcore sex scenes – eight in total – than most other adult films. And that sex is being performed by some of the very best in the business, including jessica drake, Asa Akira, Asphyxia Noir, Tommy Gunn, and Derrick Pierce. Make no mistake, despite everyone talking about how amazing Underworld looks, it is fully loaded with high-quality, hardcore sex scenes.
And speaking of the sex scenes, Underworld is one of jessica drake’s most complete and best performances of her career. And considering the caliber of work that she has already delivered, that is a bold statement. Underworld contains eight hardcore scenes and jessica drake stars in five of them. Of those, the best was probably the last one, which featured jessica drake having to give some sex to Death, played by Derrick Pierce. That scene alone makes Underworld worth the price of admission.
I’m also going to take a minute to give Underworld props for featuring condoms in all of its sex scenes. A lot of people repeatedly say that you can’t make a porn that people will want to watch if you have performers using condoms in the sex scenes. Underworld stands as shining evidence that yes, you can make high-quality porn and still have performers using safer sex. And as for why that’s so important, keep in mind that T.J. Cummings – who recently tested positive for HIV – was a member of the Underworld cast.
Finally, the entire cast of Underworld was absolutely incredible. From top to bottom, the performers and actors that brought the film to life all did a hell of a job. The acting was great, the sex was great, and they were a key element in why this movie was so much fun to watch. That being said, the performance of Derrick Pierce (read my interview with Derrick!) as Death was probably the best of anyone. He absolutely owned that role and after seeing him as the Grim Reaper, I really can’t imagine anyone else is porn being able to do it better.
What I didn’t like about Underworld…
Okay, there really wasn’t anything that was bad about Underworld. But if I had to pick something to criticize (and because this is a review, I will), it would be that I would have liked to see the Purgatory that jessica drake has to make her way through be a little bit more over the top and not tied to her emergency surgery. Each of the scenes in Purgatory had a surgery related theme – scalpel and life support, blood, gause, stitches, etc. In my opinion, it would have been better to make Purgatory less tied to medical surgery and more about demons, angels, and other mystical things.
The bottom line…
Underworld is an amazing porn movie. With this movie, Brad Armstrong has created an epic film that will be long remembered as one of the best adult films ever produced. The scenery is great, the costumes are even better, the sex scenes are delivered in both quality and quantity, and the cast was top-notch. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
