Top Guns – Looking Back at the XXX Classic

Years later, Digital Playground’s Top Gun porn movie remains a must-see triumph of adult cinema…

Top Guns (2011)

Fly hard with deep throttle action as Jesse Jane and Riley Steele show the men the true definition of hardcore power. They are the new top guns, the two best female fighter pilots the Air has to offer going up against their arch rivals, Kayden Kross and Stoya, the unbeatable bitches from the Navy. It’s lust-fueled girls going up against the hardest fly boys in the military to prove they’ve got more thrust in their game and more devious tactics than any enemy riding their tail.

In 2011, Digital Playground released Top Guns and the film instantly became one of the studio’s best-selling and most popular releases. The movie was a turbocharged mix of incredible hardcore talent, a highly acclaimed adult film director, impressive visual effects and a massive (for Porn) production budget. More than a decade later, Top Guns remains a beloved XXX classic.

A lot has changed since Top Guns made its debut eleven years ago. Jesse Jane, Digital Playground’s most bankable contract star, left the studio in 2014 and became a free agent. Riley Steele and Stoya also left around the same time. Kayden Kross also moved away from DP has gone on to establish herself as one of the industry’s most acclaimed directors. Robby D., who directed Top Guns, past away in late 2021. And Raven Alexis, who won a Best Supporting Actress award for her role in the film, died in March 2022 at the age of 35.

What’s remained constant over the span of all that change has been the enduring popularity of Top Guns.

Top Guns | What made this movie so special?

In the early 2000s, Digital Playground rose up as one of Porn’s most powerful studios. Much of that success can be traced back to when Jesse Jane signed on as an exclusive performer in 2002. Taking advantage of her popularity, Digital Playground began cranking out several Jesse Jane-centric feature films each year. When Pirates was released in 2005, Jesse was at the height of her powers and that movie went on to become one of the best-selling adult films of all time.

Fast forward to 2010. At this point, Digital Playground had added Stoya, Kayden Kross and Riley Steele to its mix of contract superstars. And while the studio had been routinely building films around this foursome, it had even grander plans for their next movie, a Top Gun parody that it would market as its next huge blockbuster. Robby D., who was instrumental in Digital Playground’s success and who had directed many of Jesse Jane’s movies over the years, was given the largest production budget of his career and entrusted with building crafting something special.

In talking about his fighter jet and sex fueled action porn film, this is what Robby D. had to say

I knew when we were shooting this movie that it was going to be huge. And the post-production special effects are sick.

In addition to the “sick” special effects, Top Guns would also serve up some of the most intense hardcore action that any of the Digital Playground starlets had ever engaged in up to that point. Jesse Jane described the floor of an airplane hanger being “completely drenched” in cum after an epic orgy scene. And Kayden Kross said her locker-room scene with co-star Scott Nails was one of the hottest of her career.

Production on Top Guns finished up in late 2010 and a release date of March 2011 was set. To ensure that the movie received as much attention as possible, Digital Playground unleashed a massive marketing campaign in the events leading up to the release. It worked. Pre-sales for Top Guns skyrocketed to the point that the studio had to do three pressings of DVDs before the release date just to keep up with demand.

To say that the movie was a hit would be an understatement. Xcritic, one of the leading porn review sites, graded the film as “Highly Recommended”. Additionally, Top Guns earned a collective 15 award nominations from AVN and XBIZ, including nods for Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Special Effects and Best Art Direction. Robby D. received multiple Best Director nominations, XBIZ awarded the film Best Parody Release of the Year and the movie won was honored with the Best Film trophy by Nightmoves Magazine.

Die-Screaming went on to rank Top Guns as one of the 10 Best Digital Playground Movies ever made.

But even with all of that, perhaps the most telling gauge of just how amazing this movie is rests with just how popular this movie has remained after all these years. While it’s not uncommon for adult films to have flashes of sales or critical acclaim, it’s rare for one to ascend to the heights of being considered a “classic”. That, in my view, is exactly what we must consider Top Guns.
