A look at who the big winners (and losers) were of the 2014 AVN Awards
The 2014 AVN Award Winners have been announced. And now that the awards show and the celebration and all of the after parties are over, I thought it would be worth taking a moment to take a close look at who won big. And at who got snubbed. Because that type of thing is always interesting and entertaining.
No standout pornstars
In looking at which pornstars won which awards, it’s hard to say that anyone really had a “big” night. And in terms of number of awards won, the field was pretty even. Four pornstars received three performance awards; Anikka Albrite, James Deen, Remy LaCroix, and Riley Reid. And right behind them were the stars that each received two awards; Bonnie Rotten, Manuel Ferrara, and Mia Malkova.
Bonnie Rotten won Female Performer of the Year, while Manuel Ferrara took the Male Performer of the Year award. Mia Malkova was recognized as Best New Starlet and Ike Diezel got Best Male Newcomer. Tommy Pistol won Best Actor and Remy LaCroix received Best Actress. All told, none of that came as a big surprise and no single performer really stood out as “the big winner”.
So who got snubbed? We’ll start with Lisa Ann. Despite being one of the most popular pornstars currently working in the business, she only came away with the Fan Award for Best MILF. This seems to happen to her every year and it’s hard to argue that politics doesn’t seem to have something to do with it. And while Anikka Albrite did come away with 3 awards, she was nominated for 13 AVN Awards, so coming away with so few (and not grabbing Female Performer of the Year) seems a bit disappointing.
I was also a bit sad to see Skin Diamond only get 2 awards, Chanel Preston get only 1, and jessica drake get just 1 despite her starring in the biggest porn film of the year; Underworld.
Evil Angel dominated
In terms of porn studios, none came close to matching the dominance of Evil Angel. That studio owned the night, taking home 19 AVN Awards. The next closest was Jules Jordan Video and Wicked Pictures, each of which received 13 awards. If it wasn’t already clear that Evil Angel is the biggest powerhouse in porn (and I think it was), it should be now.
As for the studio that seems to have fallen the farthest from grace, that unfortunate distinction goes to Digital Playground. At one point one of the industry’s vanguards, DP didn’t get any – not one – AVN Award. And with news that Jesse Jane has decided to leave DP after her contract expires later this year, it would seem that Digital Playground has some work to do in terms of rebuilding its brand and the respect it once commanded.
Underworld was the porn film of the year
To the surprise of absolutely no one, Underworld came away as the most award winning porn film of 2013. It earned 9 AVN Awards, including Movie of the Year and Best Drama. Coming in second behind Underworld was Anikka, the porn film built around Anikka Albrite. And with that being said, someone please explain to me how Anikka Albrite only managed to win 3 AVN Awards and jessica drake – who was the star of Underworld – only received 1.
As for which porn movies got the shaft, that list would have to start with Daddy’s Girls. Starring Maddy O’Reilly and Riley Reid, that film was one of the very best of the year in my opinion. It received 6 AVN Award nominations, but didn’t a single damn award. And then there was Devil on a Chain. That movie, which starred and was directed by Kimberly Kane, received 8 AVN nominations and, again, didn’t win any. The New Behind the Green Door also received 8 AVN nomination, and only won 1.
