Venom to Get His Own Film

Sony Pictures has been paying attention to what Marvel Comics has been doing with the Avengers and wants to start doing the same thing. And by “the same thing”, I’m referring to building a series of superhero movie franchises and then tying them all together, making a shitload of money in the process. The studio has announced that it is actively working on a feature length Venom film, which will tell the story of Eddie Brock. Additionally, it’s highly likely that Sony will work to intertwine its Amazing Spider-Man franchise with this Venom movie. And hopefully do a better job that they did with Spider-Man 3.
At a recent event promoting The Amazing Spider-Man, the film’s producers talked a bit (and sometimes vaguely) about their Venom plans. Avi Arad gave some insight into what the Venom film would consist of, saying…
It’s an Eddie Brock story… We want to be as close to the comics as possible. Especially in Eddie Brock’s story. But again, pseudo-sceince is becoming science. All these tidbits about webs, artificial webs, is a huge industry now. Spiderwebs have unique qualities that will be huge for communications, fibers, and so forth. So we have taken the approach that we want to make the huge amazing movie about Eddie.
But what about the possibility of Sony having its Amazing Spider-Man crossover with its Venom film? I mean, how can they not, right? Matt Tolmach, also one of the Amazing Spider-Man producers, kind of hinted at that, saying…
What I’m trying to say to you without giving anything away is hopefully all these worlds will live together in peace someday… look for the worlds to make sense with one another.

And by “live together in peace”, it’s fairly obvious that Tolmach is talking about merging the two franchises in some way, at some point. And, make no mistake, Sony could and probably will make a franchise out of Venom. Considering the popularity of the character, and assuming Sony actually gets it right (they have Josh Trank, who wrote Chronicle, so this shouldn’t be an issue), it’s not hard to imagine three very profitable Venom films.
At this point, it’s still very early and the script is still in development, with no mention at all of who would actually star in the Venom movie. As more information about the Venom film is released, I’ll be sure to keep you up to speed. Until then, share your thoughts in the comment section below.
