Some of the biggest news to come out of Toy Fair 2012 actually has nothing to do with toys. Although, considering it does pertain to Michael Bay, it does have a lot to do with tools. Speaking to MTV, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (who’s also producing GI Joe: Retaliation) confirmed that, yes, director Michael Bay will be returning for the fourth installment of the Transformers franchise. Additionally, he mentioned that while a story has not yet been finalized, Transformers 4, which will be released in the Summer of 2014, would be a “soft reboot”. Finally, as for what characters would be returning, Bonaventura was very vague, only willing to confirm that it would be a good bet that both Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee would make the cut.
Bonaventuara, the producer of the Transformers franchise, gave the following statement at Toy Fair 2012 about what we should expect from Transformers 4…
“Michael’s going to direct, and it’ll be in the summer of 2014. We’ll be releasing then. I think the challenge there is that we are really going to do a reboot and what that’s going to be, we don’t even know yet. Again, it’s a hybrid because it’s a funny thing. I’m not involved with ‘Spider-Man,’ but what I perceive ‘Spider-Man’ to be is just a redoing of the whole thing. It’s not. It’s an evolution. There’s still continuity that’s going on, yet there will be a lot of new cast. Whether there’s anybody from the first cast, we don’t even know yet. The trust is it’s going to be a whole new story. The characters that would certainly come along are Optimus and Bumblebee, I’m sure.”

Michael Bay - Director of the Transformers franchise
So, fuck, Michael Bay is coming back for Transformers 4. While there was absolutely really, really awesome moments in all three of the previous Transformers films, there were also a lot of very, very low points, all of which can be blamed on Bay and his unwavering desire to “improve” upon the Transformers characters (just look what he did with Devastator…) and include mindless characters (pretty much every human character in the films…) for the sole purpose of injecting comic relief, sex appeal, and raw testosterone. Also, keep in mind that Michael Bay has gone on record as saying that he “hates” the Dinobots. To say the least, I’m disappointed that this ass-bag is coming back for Transformers 4.
Also, Bonaventuara’s comments about the whole reboot thing stuck me as a bit confusing. It’s a reboot, but not a reboot? A soft reboot that also keeps the continuity from the previous three films? I suppose the confusion can be chalked up to the fact that the story for Transformers 4 hasn’t yet been written, but it seems as if Bonaventuara has absolutely no clue about what direction the new movie will be going. But, hey, with Michael Bay still calling the shots, do any of the other details even matter? God, I fucking hate Michael Bay.
Anyway, to recap, Transformers 4 will be in theaters in the Summer of 2014, it may (or may not) be a reboot, and Michael Bay will be directing. Still now word if Jason Statham will be starring in the lead role (that actually probably would be cool) and Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee are the only ones who’ve so far earned a spot in the cast. As more details regarding Transformers 4 become available, I’ll be sure to share.
