Ocarina of Time REALLY played havoc with the Zelda timeline
Last week, a new Zelda artbook, titled Hyrule Historia, hit book stores. One of the most significant things to come out of that book (which is currently only available in Japanese) is an official Zelda timeline. And by “official”, I mean that the supervising editor of the book was a Mr. Eiji Aonuma, who is the guy who runs the Zelda operations over at Nintendo. It took about a week, but translated versions of this timeline are now popping up all over the Internet. And, wow, is the timeline a mess.
It starts off pretty straightforward enough. However, when things get to Ocarina of Time, all hell breaks loose. Depending on the success or failure of the hero, the timeline splits into three possibilities. Here’s how Kotaku described the Ocarina split…
“Note that the “split” is due to Ocarina’s time differences and assumptions based on the different ways that story could have ended and branched off from his two ages: the Link to the Past split is Link failing, the Majora’s split is Link defeating Ganon and branching off from his boyhood and the Wind Waker split is Link defeating Ganon and branching from his older years.
So, yeah, that suggests not only alternate universes, but two parallel universes spinning off the same single outcome.”
While I give Nintendo credit for attempting to map out the entire Zelda chronology of things, it appears that trying to make everything fit into a neat, easily explainable timeline has resulted in them reaching a bit. Once you get into multiple parallel universes (two of which being generated from the SAME event and outcome), you just know that the poor bastards who put this thing together had to be cutting themselves and mainlining heroine by the end of it. Anyway, take a look at the timeline below. For the much, much bigger version, just click on the picture.
So what do you all think? Does this official Zelda timeline make sense, or does it just muddy things up even more? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
