Will Spider-Man be making an appearance in The Avengers movie?
The newest and hottest rumor flying around the Internet regarding The Avengers movie speculates about the possibility of Spider-Man having some sort of cameo appearance in the film. Actress Jenny Agutter (American Werewolf in London) has a role in The Avengers movie and recently gave an interview with The Radio Times. When asked about her role, she explained that she was sworn to secrecy, and then seeming accidentally dropped a huge bombshell. She mentioned Spider-Man being on the set of The Avengers. Eh?
Here’s Ms. Agutter’s head-scratching quote that has the Internet rumor mill on fire….
“As for Agutter, she’s about to metamorphose again to appear alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson in upcoming Hollywood blockbuster The Avengers.
‘I’m sworn to secrecy! I wasn’t allowed a script until I got there, and when I did I felt like a complete child being on big sets and a huge parking lot full of Winnebagos.’
She does let slip that two of these housed Spider-Man and Iron Man; we suspect Agutter won’t able to avoid sci-fi conventions for much longer.”

Actress Jenny Agutter
Okay, so she clearly states that Spider-Man is a part of The Avengers. However, before getting all crazy, let’s first put this in perspective. Currently, the rights to Spider-Man are owned by Sony, so having Spidey appear in the Avengers, a Marvel Studios film, would require all sorts of legal deals, contracts, and payments. Second, let’s not discount the possibility that Jenny Agutter simply made a mistake. Perhaps she meant Captain America? As a comic geek, I find it impossible to confuse the two, as I’m sure you do as well, however, it’s still a possibility for someone who’s never picked up a comic book (I’m not sure if Ms. Agutter is a comic fan or not). So with all of this in mind, it’s probably a safe bet that Spider-Man will NOT be making any sort of appearance in The Avengers.
But, of course, not impossible. With a new Amazing Spider-Man film coming out this Summer, it’s possible that Sony was willing to make some agreements to get Spider-Man in the Avengers film, however briefly, so as to generate huge buzz for its own movie. Additionally, when the latest Avengers movie toy line was officially introduced a few days ago by Marvel Comics and Hasbro, not all of the toys were revealed and Hasbro hinted that some of the characters would be “classic Marvel heroes”. Everyone assumes this meant characters who were associated with the comics but not necessarily with the film. However, were they hinting at an Avengers Spider-Man action figure?
Again, I will go on record as saying this is all probably a whole lot of fuss over nothing. While Jenny Agutter may have let slip one of the biggest spoilers of The Avengers film, it’s more than likely that she just got her comic characters mixed up. While fans would love to see Spider-Man in the Avengers movie, and I’m sure Marvel would as well, the legal and financial hurdles that would need to be overcome would be massive. While I won’t go so far as to say it’s impossible, I will say it’s extremely unlikely. What do you think?
