The Infinite - Canceled

The Infinite - Apparently not so "infinite"

January is shaping up to be a rough month for Rob Liefeld.  First, we learned that his Hawk and Dove series from DC would be ending with issue 8.  Now we learn that the other monthly book that he was drawing, The Infinite, will also be canceled.  Apparently, based on tweets that Liefeld sent out this weekend, the book is ending due to creative differences.  Liefeld explained that he wanted to bring in another inker, but the decision was over-ruled by Skybound (the Image Comics imprint, run by Infinite writer Robert Kirkman) and that was enough to kill The Infinite.

From the man himself…

The Infinite Canceled - Rob Liefeld Tweets

As I mentioned, The Infinite was written by Robert Kirkman, who owns Skybound.  So when Liefeld is talking about creative differences with Skybound, what he’s really means is creative differences with Robert Kirkman.  And while Kirkman (arguably the most powerful guy currently at Image Comics) hasn’t responded or offered any sort of statement on the subject, it doesn’t sound good.  Liefeld wasn’t sugar coating anything here and blunt phrases like, “It’s over,” don’t leave too much room for reconciliation.

So now, heading into this week’s Image Expo, all eyes will be on Rob Liefeld and Robert Kirkman and what they say, and don’t say, about The Infinite and their working relationship going forward.  I’m guessing that calmer heads prevail and, despite what may be going on behind the scenes, the two power-house creators play nice and present a united front.  Image Comics has a whole lot going right for it and this little spat of drama is likely, but maybe not, just a bump in the road.  And, hey, with Liefeld’s Extreme Studios relaunch, it’s possible that the title might eventually show up there, where Liefeld would have the control that he wants/demands.

Bottom line, though: The Infinite is canceled.  Condolences to any fans of the book.
