Die-Screaming interviews porn stud Ricky Johnson
Ricky Johnson is one of the industry’s brightest new talents. And I’m not just saying that to be nice. He won the 2017 AVN Best Male Newcomer trophy, was nominated for ten AVN awards in 2018 (including Male Performer of the Year) and was ranked by Die-Screaming as the #9 Best Male Pornstar of 2017. Impressive, yes?
I had the opportunity to ask Mr. Johnson a few questions about his career, the porn industry and other stuff. How’d it go? Well, he didn’t pepper spray me or file for a restraining order, so better than most of my other interactions with people. Take a look…
Ricky Johnson | The Die-Screaming interview
Die-Screaming: What was it that made you want to get into porn and, once you were working in the industry, was it what you expected?
Ricky Johnson: It was pure curiosity. I watched porn from time to time and thought to myself, I want to try this. I didn’t really know what to expect when I joined the industry. I have been pleased, for the most part, with everything that I’ve experienced from the industry up to this point.
It seems like we see dozens of new girls getting into porn every month, but see only a handful of new guys each year. How hard is it for a guy to get started in porn and then, once he has, to get enough work to make a living out of it?
I don’t think it’s hard for guys to get started if he has all the tools. It’s hard for a male talent to stay in. When you first get in porn as a guy you aren’t going to be on anybody’s radar unless you have like a 13-inch dick. You have to earn the respect of directors and performers when you’re the new guy.
It takes time and solid performances to show that you aren’t a liability and can get scenes done. I believe personality is a huge factor as well. No one really wants to work with an asshole regardless of skill and looks. So, I say to any new guy, stay humble, be yourself, and always speak up if you’re uncomfortable.
How many times a day do random dudes contact you asking how they can become a pornstar and how annoying does that get?
At the very least, I get contacted once a day about how to get in the industry. My advice to that is, if you really want to become a pornstar then you will find a way. The thing is a lot of people will talk about it and show interest but when it’s time to get serious, the butterflies come and they back out.
You’ve achieved a huge amount of success early in your career and, at least in my opinion, you’re one of the top talents currently working in the business. To what do you credit all that success?
Thank you, I appreciate that.
I credit everyone I’ve worked with because they’ve allowed me to show the real me through my scenes. When I first got in I was fairly shy in regards to being myself; kind of like a turtle in its shell. My agency has been wonderful because they handle all the booking and we speak regularly on what scenes to accept and not accept, along with building my brand.
The Rub PR’s, Erika Icon, has been a huge help! She has allowed my work to be seen by others who I wouldn’t have had access to reach out to. I believe that if you surround yourself with the right people, it could make the path to success that much easier.
Would you ever want to get into directing?
Yes, I plan on by the end of 2018. I got some stuff brewing up in the kitchen. On my off days, I’m always plotting other endeavors. One of the main reasons I joined the industry was for directing purposes, so that’s always been the end goal.
Considering all that you’ve already done and accomplished, what are some goals of yours that you haven’t yet achieved?
One would be becoming performer of the year. I feel like that’s one of the highest accomplishments of a male performer. Being on the opposite side of the camera is a goal I plan to have completed by the year’s end.
When you aren’t doing porn stuff, what do you do in your free time?
When I am not doing porn stuff, I’m pretty much playing the video game Super Smash Bros with my roommate. I lift every now and then just to stay in shape. I also love spending time with friends and just doing random and spontaneous stuff.
Any upcoming films or projects of yours that we should know about?
I have a fair amount of exciting projects coming up but I don’t know how kept under wrap they are so I’ll be vague. I have scenes with Brazzers and Pure Taboo that I’m excited, along with DarkX, Bang Bros and more.
