WonderCon 2012 – Prometheus Trailer [Video]

While there’s certainly been a huge amount of comic book related news coming out of WonderCon 2012, perhaps the biggest and most exciting thing to come out of that convention has been the first full theatrical trailer for Prometheus (a shorter, teaser trailer was released a while ago).  Prometheus, for those that have been living under a rock, marks the return of director Ridley Scott to the Sci-Fi film genre and is a movie that is whispered to be the prequel to Alien.  So, yeah, a whole lot of people are all kinds of excited about this thing.  And, without further commentary, here’s the Prometheus trailer we’ve all been waiting for…

As you can see, there’s more than just a passing resemblance between Prometheus and Alien.  All the way down to the font used for the titles, it would seem that Prometheus and Alien share quite a bit.  Fans and the press have already dubbed Prometheus “an Alien prequel”, although Ridley Scott hasn’t been very clear at all about whether it is or isn’t the Alien origin story.  Here’s how The Hollywood Reporter described the unveiling of the Prometheus trailer and the question of the Alien connection…

The trailer is a slick piece of work, teasing a mystery (which includes an “invitation” from another civilization) and an expedition featuring co-stars Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender, then slowly ratcheting up the tension. Cries of “Get it off! Get if off” suggest a return to the face-hugging alien creatures that have starred in four Alien movies, including Scott’s 1979 original. Images in the trailer definitely harken back to that first movie.

Scott, who received scattered standing ovations when he showed up on stage, revealed few details of the plot. He played down the Alien connection, saying that while there has been talk of the movie having “DNA from Alien,” once he and Lindelof began story meetings, it morphed into something else.

“It evolved into another universe,” he said. “If we’re lucky, there’ll be a second part. It does leave you with some nice open questions.”

So, like I said, nothing has been cleared up in terms of Prometheus being an Alien prequel, a sequel, or something else entirely.  As more insight is revealed, I’ll be sure to pass it along.  Until then, feel free to share your thoughts on the Prometheus trailer in the comments below.
