How much is the Kim Kardashian sex tape really worth?
Pornhub wants to buy the rights to the Kim Kardashian sex tape and the associated website, KimKSuperstar.com, that markets the video. And the company is willing to pay at least $5 million to get them. Currently, Vivid Entertainment owns the rights to the tape and the KimKSuperstar pay site that allows fans to watch the video (for a price) has received millions of hits just over the past week, a result of the Kardashian wedding hype. And while $5 million may seem like a shit-ton of money, just last week Vivid made it clear that it puts a value on the tape of about $30 million. This means that if Pornhub really wants that tape, it will probably have to up its offer by quite a bit.
For those that don’t know the whole history of the Kim Kardashian sex tape, it may be worth taking a look back at how we go to this point. In 2007, Kim Kardashian and hip-hop artist Ray J hooked up and made a homemade sex tape. As tends to happen with young and careless celebrities, their sex tape was leaked. Vivid Entertainment bought the tape for $1 million and released it as a DVD, titled Kim Kardashian: Superstar. Kardashian immediately filed a law suit against Vivid (keep in mind her father, Robert, is one of the most powerful lawyers in the United States), but dropped it after Vivid offered her a $5 million settlement. In addition to the Kim Kardashian: Superstar DVD, Vivid also setup a membership website, KimKSuperstar.com, that allows members to stream the full length video. In making its $5 million dollar offer to Vivid, Pornhub said it wanted to buy both the rights to the video and the website. Last week, however, an anonymous lawyer contacted Vivid and inquired how much it would cost to buy the rights to the Kardashian sex tape so that it could be taken off the market for good. Vivid came back with a value of $30 million, a value that Pornhub obviously thought was too high.
Here is the full letter that Pornhub sent over to Vivid, making its offer for the Kardashian sex tape…
“After reviewing last week’s headlines in regards to the attorney who came forward inquiring about the possible sale of the Kimksuperstar.com for an unknown third party, we’d also like to throw our hat into the “virtual arena.” We read last week that you’d entertain offers somewhere around the $30 Million dollar range. While we don’t discount for a minute the value of both Kim Kardashian and Ray-J’s “brands,” we have to respectfully disagree when it comes to the actual value of the DVD.
I don’t have to tell you Mr. Hirsch that DVD’s are a dying market, and there is only so much money to still be made with Video on Demand for hotel as well as online. That is how we came to the appraisal of the full rights of Kimksuperstar.com to be somewhere between the $5-$10 Million dollar range and would gladly like to start with an offer of $5M.

Vivid has yet to respond to Pornhub’s offer for the Kardashian sex tape. However, it seems that if Vivid has put a $30 million price tag on the video, and Pornhub values it at only between $5 to $10 million, then the two sides are seemingly $20 to $25 million apart. Also keep in mind that both Kim Kardashian and Ray J will probably issue lawsuits if the rights to the video change hands (Ray J has already made it clear he will sue if this deal goes through) and will attempt to ensure that they both get their fair share for the tape. In the end, it may simply be too expensive and complicated for the Karashian sex tape to change hands.
