Pennsylvania, Set Our Liquor Stores Free

Privatize Pennsylvania Liquor Stores

In Pennsylvania, the State runs the sale of liquor like a Soviet dictator.

Here in Pennsylvania, the state government owns and operates all of the liquor stores.  That means that if you want to but liquor, you need to go to a store, run by state employees, to make your purchase.  This is bullshit.  Our new governor, Tom Corbett, however, wants to change all of that.  He wants to sell all of the state liquor stores and turn the whole operation over to the private sector.  This needs to happen.

Why the fuck is the state monopolizing the whole liquor industry, you ask?  It all goes back to prohibition when the government, eager to make life as shitty as possible for its citizens, decided that it would be a good idea to control the access of alcohol.  Aside from contributing to the rise of organized crime, this policy accomplished nothing.  The small minded morons who’ve run the state of Pennsylvania, however, still cling to this antiquated and failed policy.

Why?  It’s complicated.  To make a long story short, however, it has a lot to do with the those radical Nazi MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) idiots, unions, and corrupt lawmakers.  MADD, a group of angry parents who seek to impose their Puritan morals on everyone, thinks that privatizing liquor stores will somehow lead to increased underage drinking.  The union the represents the state’s liquor store employees, naturally, is fighting tooth and nail to keep everything just the way it is at the risk of having to give up its power.  And state politicians, who lovingly accept large donations from both MADD and the union are perfectly happy to keep both groups happy.  All of this results in the citizens of Pennsylvania getting screwed.

Privatize PA Liquor Stores

The state controls every aspect of liquor sales.  The state determines what liquor we can and can’t buy, how much we pay for it, and when we’re allowed to buy it.  If this sounds like some some sort of Soviet imposed rationing system, it’s because it pretty much is.  Most stores aren’t open on Sundays.  The selection at many of the stores is small.  Prices on many of the items the stores do carry are much higher than they are anywhere else.  Many people, thirsting for better booze at competitive prices, drive out of state to purchase their liquor.

Governor Corbett, if you are reading this (I know you’re not.  Someone show it to him, please.), PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do everything you can to set our liquor stores free!  Pennsylvania liquor stores need to be privatized and the State needs to get out of the booze business.  The people of Pennsylvania, especially this person, is sick and fucking tired of this bullshit.  We are Americans.  Let us buy our liquor like Americans.
