***Bid on a pair of these shoes now, with all proceeds going to support finding a cure to Parkinson’s Disease.***
One of the classic scenes from Back to the Future 2 was when Marty McFly straps on a pair of futuristic Nike “Air Mag” sneakers. The shoes featured self-tightening laces, and fit instantly to his feet. Back to the Future 2 was set (mostly) in the year 2015. Well, four years ahead of schedule, Nike is preparing to make the Air Mag sneakers a reality, moving from a movie prop to something you can actually buy at a shoe store. Self-tightening laces and flashy lights and all.
Rumors started to swirl about some new Back to the Future development yesterday when Frank Marshall, the legendary Hollywood producer who helped make the Back to the Future trillogy in the 1980′s sent out the following tweet…
As you can imagine, this single tweet ignited a firestorm of guessing games. Was Back to the Future IV in the works? Perhaps a reboot of the original movie? Or maybe the original trilogy would be released in 3D? All good guesses, however, all missed the mark. News quickly spread of an impending Nike press conference, one that would involve Back to the Future and <gasp> possibly the Air Mag sneakers.
To quote from a post appearing over on TechCrunch.com…
“Marty McFly’s crazy kicks in Back To The Future II have long been a geek’s dream. Ostensibly made by Nike in the film, they would tighten themselves around your feet automatically and, more important, they’ve been the paragon of ultimate geekiness for a certain subset of shoe fanatics.
Well, now it looks like you, too, can go back… to the future. Nike just sent out invitations to an event in LA tomorrow hinting at the actual existence of the Air Mags. The invitation included a pair of Doc’s aluminum shades and a bunch of BTTF merch, so clearly something is afoot.
The company patented the Mags’ power laces back in 2010 so it’s clear that the final product is ready to at least unveil to a legion of panting shoe-heads.”
Adding to the hype surrounding the Air Mag news is the following teaser video, which recently popped up on Youtube under the account name of “DocEmmettBrown88″…
