Michael J Fox - Back to the Future 2 - Nike Air Mag

Nike will be auctioning off 1,500 Air Mag Back to the Future sneakers to help cure Parkinson's

Yesterday, we told you about how Nike was preparing to unveil the real-life Air Mag sneakers, shoes based off of the ones that appeared in Back to the Future II.  The shoes will be exact replicas (sort of) of the ones worn by Marty McFly wore in that movie.  The shoes will feature re-chargeable LED lights, including a light up Nike logo on the strap, and will be auctioned off on eBay.  Sales of the shoes will benefit the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s foundation to help find a cure for Parkinson’s, a disease that affects over five million people world wide.  Additionally, only 1,500 pairs of the Back to the Future Air Mags will be produced, meaning these things will probably go for a quite a hefty price.  And, considering all of that money is going to charity, that’s a good thing.

And now for the less than exciting news.  Contrary to previous reports, the Nike Air Mags will not feature power lacing technology.  And while Nike did file for a patent for this type of technology last year, and everyone believes that auto-lacing shoes will be unveiled by Nike at some point (maybe even in the next version of the Air Mag?), it will not be a part of this sneaker design.  Sad, I know.  Still, how freaking cool is it that Michael J. Fox is using these sneakers to raise money for his foundation?  Even without the power lacing awesomeness, these shoes are still the stuff of a geek’s wet-dream and just adds to the already impressive legacy of the Back to the Future legacy.

What do you all think about these Nike Air Mags?  Anyone planning on bidding?  Let me know in the comments.
