Kevin Feige is the top guy over at Marvel Studios. He’s been instrumental in putting together Marvel’s current batch of blockbuster movies, including Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers. To say he’s one of the most successful and powerful people currently working in Hollywood would be a fair statement. So, the fact that he’s just confirmed that Marvel Studios will be putting together a Guardians of the Galaxy movie should be taken very seriously. Seriously. Marvel is going to make a Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
Several months ago, I posted about rumblings regarding a possible Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Considering that the Guardians are, at best, a B List property and haven’t had their own comic book in several years, it came as a bit of a surprise that Marvel would make the considerably huge investment into making a full-blown live action Guardians of the Galaxy movie. However, with Kevin Feige confirming it, it would appear that Marvel is serious about making this thing happen. In an interview given over at Crave Online, here’s what Feige had to say…
We are very excited about bringing things like that, maybe things exactly like that, to the screen. [...] When you tell people, you know what would be really cool? This movie, and there’s a raccoon, and there’s a tree… And they go, ‘What?’ And people like you know what it is, and get excited. And the majority of people go, ‘Did you say a raccoon and a tree?’ ’Oh yeah, they’re going to steal the whole movie. They’re hilarious.’ ’Okay, I’ll believe it when I see it.’ I like that.
Based on this quote, it would appear that not only is Marvel dead serious about bringing The Guardians of the Galaxy to the big screen, but the company will also be including Rocket Raccoon. And, apparently, he’s going to be a pretty big piece of the movie. Which, in my opinion, is great. One of the things I would have hated would have been if Marvel tried to make a Guardians of the Galaxy movie that strayed far from the original comic book material. If you’re going to make a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, go big or go home. And that means keeping true to the lineup and being okay with taking the risk of investing hundreds of millions of dollars into a movie that features a talking raccoon in outer space.
And, at this point, I should probably pause to give a brief introduction to the Guardians of the Galaxy, as many of you are no doubt not all that familiar with them. The Guardians were originally created in 1969 and mainly served as guest-star material until the 1990′s, when they got their own comic series. That team was composed of several characters including Starhawk, Firelord, Nikki, Talon, Yellowjacket, Replica, and Major Vance Astro. This is not the team that the movie will be based on. In 2008, a second Guardians of the Galaxy book was launched with a whole new lineup, which was comprised of…
- Drax the Destroyer
- Rocket Raccoon
- Jack Flag
- Major Victory
This second Guardians of the Galaxy series is the one the movie will be based on. If you recognize any two of those characters, from either list, congratulations. You are clearly a hardcore comic geek and I salute you. For everyone else, I suggest you go to your local comic shop and look through the Quarter Bin where you can probably get the entire 25 issue run of Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 for, probably, under $10. As more information about the Guardians of the Galaxy movie is released, I’ll be sure to keep you up to speed. Until then, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
