Even though everyone knew it was a 100% certainty to happen, Disney (the parent company of Marvel) had yet to officially announce the release date and plot summary for Captain America 2. Now, that formality has been cleared up, with Marvel Studios setting April 4th 2014 as the day that Captain America 2 will hit theaters. Additionally, the studio provided a very brief and very high-level plot summary. Unless something catastrophic happens, Chris Evans will once again be playing the role of Steve Rogers/Captain America in the sequel.
In a very short press release, Disney made everything official…
The second installment will pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.
The mention of Nick Fury and SHIELD would seem to indicate that Samuel L. Jackson will continue his marathon appearance in the Marvel Studios line of Avengers films. Additionally, it probably wouldn’t be going too far out on a ledge to assume that Cobie Smulders could return to her role as Agent Maria Hill or Clark Gregg in his always entertaining role of Agent Coulson. And, where there’s SHIELD, there’s always the chance to catch a scene or two of Black Widow and Hawkeye, right?
It will also be interesting to see if Marvel uses Captain America 2 to introduce any new characters. Some of the ones that come to mind are Sharon Carter, Falcon, Baron Zemo, or maybe even (and I know this is a long shot…) Winter Soldier. Since the script for Captain America 2 isn’t even finalized at this point, we could speculate all day long without much to show for it. That being said, as more details regarding Captain America 2 are released, I’ll be sure to keep you up to speed. In the meantime, feel free to leave your thoughts on the Cap sequel in the comments below.
