Breaking down the Alex Gonz/Lisa Ann/Derek Hay hepatitis C saga
Lisa Ann set off a firestorm within the porn industry this past week. The drama revolved around a male performer, Alex Gonz, whom Lisa Ann publicly accused of hiding the fact that he had Hepatitis C while still trying to perform in hardcore sex scenes. Not stopping there, Lisa Ann also accused talent agency LA Direct Models of allowing Alex Gonz to perform in sex scenes despite having an invalid STD test. As a result of all these accusations, the porn industry erupted into a chaotic storm of halted production, finger pointing, and people taking sides.
Lisa Ann tweets set off a Hepatitis C shit storm
On August 11th, Lisa Ann sent out a series of tweets, explaining that she had uncovered what she believed was proof of a male performer – whom she didn’t name – as actively working to cover up the fact that he was positive for hepatitis C while still trying to be booked for hardcore porn shoots. For the sake of saving space, I’ll quote all of her tweets in the statement below…
Let me start by saying this. As a performer in the Adult Business we all take risks. One of the risks we run is having to trust others. Last week we had a situation that ended up being a mistake, mistakes happen. Everything is ok. What wasn’t a mistake was how well it was handled and how quickly most responded.
Since I have been back on sets I have noticed some things that once again, made me take the responsible, BUT less than desired roll- as I call “Whore Detective” The PI of Porn. Why do I have to be the one that sits up at night, trying to find the truth? Even worse the fact that when I start to research, I have to find out that others already know, but don’t take a stand. No one has done anything about it.
Well, as you all know me.. I will take the stand, before I do this I must be clear on a couple of things. This is NOT a vendetta, this is also just “Speculation” and I can NOT name names. But you, just like me, can do a little research on your own and make your own assumptions.
My Peers in the industry can also get involved and request the same answers I have. A couple of months ago, our 2 Industry Testing Centers that we all go to added Hepatitis Testing to our tests. We have been getting more advanced testing and we are growing in the right direction there.
Someone and maybe more, I can not be sure, but someone sadly didn’t pass. He tried both centers and they both came up with a positive test. This is when he should not even have the option to thing of another way to continue shooting, he should have stopped doing scenes!
Again this is medical information that we are no longer allowed to see, But they do have some option for us to get the information. We can go to the web site, log in and all see the same indicators, “Available” or “Unavailable” – or we can call the testing centers. Clearly “Available” means you are good to go to shoot. “Unavailable” means NO GO, you cannot shoot. This is where that “Trust” is needed.
At this point the Agent is aware their talent is NOT showing up as available. This is when the agent, if the talent is not responsible enough to make the right choice the agent should step in. Here is where I get involved. I do my homework, make multiple phone calls and put all the pieces together. And just like our last “Incident” I texted the person involved to discuss. I have NO issues calling you out, once I have enough info.
Interesting as it was, and as close to home as it could be, I got a call about doing a scene with him this weekend. Ironic, right. Here is where “Opportunity Knocks” and with a good heart, a strong conviction you open that door. I took the shoot and requested his test. After getting a copy of his test, i took that information and called the testing Center and got 2 Verbal Confirmations he can NOT work.
I contacted the production company immediately, Told them to cancel all of his shoots and to contact other producers in their companies. I did not work with him, I advice others to do the same. Like I said, this is speculation & I can’t name names. I don’t know who his exact agent is, because many of the offices have many agents.
I can say this. He is listed as the very first Male Model on the Men’s Page of LaDirectModels.com.I called the other day to discuss this. Now I have called Free Speech, I have called the agency and I have had text banter with my suspect. Tonights information share was NOT without warning. This is to protect myself and my peers.
This is also to remind the evil doings of “Breaking the Trust” they will be called out. Come on people, I love this business, I will always fight for it, But it is scarier than ever with the lack of trust . Putting others health a risk to make a bit of money is unacceptable. In closing, I am sure my phones will be blowing up, I am also ready and sure I will be threatened. It is par the coarse. I have been here before, and I will be here again.
Alex Gonz is the guy Lisa Ann is tweeting about
She didn’t use his name in any of her tweets, but she absolutely gave enough clues to make it obvious enough who she was talking about. “He is listed as the very first Male Model on the Men’s Page of LADirectModels.com.” That would be Alex Gonz. So, right away, everyone that had worked with Gonz recently now became very concerned. Hepatitis C is no small thing. It can kill you.
So if Alex Gonz was trying to hide the fact that he had tested positive for hepatitis C while actively soliciting hardcore porn work, he would obviously be putting the health of others at risk. But, to be clear, no evidence was presented showing that Gonz ever did test positive for Hep C. He submitted an STD test (from Labcorp, a facility not normally used by adult performers) that didn’t check for that particular disease, and many studios do not require performers to be tested for it. What all studios require is for performers to present an STD test that is not more than thirty days old showing they are negative for HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, and Gonorrhea. Beyond that, anything else is at the studio’s discretion.
Derek Hay, the owner of LA Direct Models, responds to the Lisa Ann allegations
As you read above, Lisa Ann didn’t call out Alex Gonz by name, but she did mention LA Direct Models. She implied that the agency, which she says was representing Gonz, knew about (or should have known) him being listed as “unavailable” according to the APHSS database. The implication was that LA Direct Models was ignoring this so that it could continue to market Gonz for hardcore porn work. A day after Lisa Ann made her Twitter accusations, Derek Hay issued the following statement…
As far as the allegation that Lisa Ann has made I cannot comment other than to say I have no evidence that supports her allegation and any information that we have at the agency shows him testing cleared for work. And through all of the last three to four months when what must be the time period that Lisa Ann alleges a positive test result, we have no record or information that he has not been cleared for work. Based on her public allegation today we are doing some investigative work to review if there is any truth to her allegation, but have nothing of substance from which to investigate.
I will first be recommending to the actor that he be transparent and truthful at all times and likely that means test at TTS as soon as possible to dispel any doubt.
The majority of studios set their own testing policy which always includes the four or five tests previously mentioned showing negative results. And the period of time from date collected to the date the test expires varies between those studios. Some are 14 days, some 15 days, some 28 and some are 30.
With this statement, Derek Hay made it clear that neither he nor anyone at LA Direct Models had any knowledge regarding Alex Gonz having tested positive for hepatitis C. Additionally, he reinforced the fact that most studios do not require a performer to present a hepatitis C test, meaning he wouldn’t have been suspicious if Derek Hay didn’t show up with such a test at his shoots.
Lisa Ann fires back at Derek Hay
All through this, Alex Gonz – the male pornstar Lisa Ann accused of covering up his positive hepatitis C status – kept a low profile. That’s understandable. However, as you can see above, Derek Hay and LA Direct Models weren’t staying as quiet. Additionally, people began to question Lisa Ann, wondering if she had enough evidence to be making such claims against either Gonz or LA Direct Models. Not backing down, Lisa Ann issued the following statement on August 13th…
Sure LATATA and anyone else can imply that I did not have the information I needed to make such claims, but can they prove me wrong? If so, I would be thrilled. Thrilled to know no one in the industry I love so much is sick. That is not what anyone wants for anyone that is here.
Too further address the fact that I am not privy to the information of someone elses health records, you are correct. But I am privy to common sense, I am also wiling to apply that common sense to satisfy my own research and to protect myself and the health and well being of MY business.
It was not difficult for me after hearing some talk in the business and then getting to actually see the outside test come in to my phone, i knew I got asked to work with Alex Gonz for a reason. A reason much larger than a scene. The reason was to do my homework, which I did. My first phone call was to Derek at LA Direct Models, I asked him some important questions. First question was “Derek, do you let your talent work with Talent who have tests that are NOT from CET or TTS” . he said “NO”. I then asked why he would have one of the Male Talent that he represents through his agency, that is active on his site, testing at Lab Corp. Derek tried to deny it but then he went on to mention there was an issue about it on another set, but he wasn’t sure what it was about …
NOW I CALL BULLSHIT.. Derek knows everything that goes on on every set because thats how he watches his money. So Please don’t try to pull that with me. I have been in the business longer than Derek, and by the looks of how this is playing out, I will be in the business a lot longer than him too.
Rightfully so. For those of you who read the Statement from Derek on XBIZ, he states the industry does NOT require a clean Hep test in order to shoot.
WELL HELLO Derek, thank you for admitting you knew about this. You came clean in your own, round about way. You are guilty, but since the Industry doesn’t require a clean HEP test, as you said, you will keep Alex on your site as available to work in sex scenes.
What I do want and need is, for those who are more worried about money than the health of the industry to get shut down. If you are an agent and you are allowing you talent to go to set with a Test from a Center outside of the parameters of the Testing Centers we all go to, well then you are wrong, and more so, you need to be shut down. If you are trying to say it is ok to work with a test that proves you have an illness, but you state that the industry doesn’t require you to be clean of HEP, well you are a sicker mother fucker than even i ever imagined. Like being the largest illegal PIMP and pushing your girls to escort and be in unsafe situations off set. Now you want us all to be unsafe on set as well.
Don’t anyone forget that I worked at LA Direct Models for a year. I learned a LOT that year. I have enough information to do what ever i need. But that would do nothing for me.
Protecting this business does EVERYTHING for me.
Derek Hay responds to Lisa Ann’s response
At this point, Lisa Ann and Derek Hay became the central figures in this whole thing. Alex Gonz wasn’t saying anything, but that didn’t seem to matter anymore. The back and forth between Lisa Ann and LA Direct Model’s Derek Hay took over as the main attraction in this whole drama. On August 14th, Derek Hay fired off a long and very detailed response to Lisa Ann and her above statement…
Direct Models did learn that Alex Gonz had tested using a draw station and using Lab Corp as the analysis Lab that returned the results. Upon learning of this he was directed by Direct Models not to do this again and to use TTS or CET, as there was no good reason that we knew of, to do otherwise, when testing in Los Angeles. Also see below:
Alex Gonz booked most of his own work and it has been stated already that Direct Models booked one (1) shoot in July and one (1) in August, for him. The second one in August was in fact commuted to a dialogue only scene not because the studio would not accept a LabCorp test but because the LabCorp test took four days for results to be returned and was not back in time for the shoot. Alex— despite numerous reminders from Direct Models chose to test only the day before the shoot and in informing us he had finaly tested, neglected to inform us that he done so using a draw station and LabCorp and not either CET or TTS. That he had done this was not revealed until the shoot day when he, Agency and Studio were looking for his test results in order that he could be cleared to shoot sex.
Direct Models did not know then, nor knows now, whether the allegation that Alex Gonz is positive for Hep C have any merit or truth. The only way that could be known would be for us to be shown a positive test result, to be informed of such a result by a doctor or other health professional or for Alex Gonz to inform us of that himself. None of those things have occurred.
For Lisa Ann to state that Direct Models did know this, or should have known this, is the height of irresponsibility and belies a gross misunderstanding or ignorance of HIPPA law. We could only know if one of the three (3) items listed above occurred. Such matters of serious health risk, require and demand a considered and calm analysis and should not be used in such a manner to conduct a personal vendetta.
[Licensed Adult Talent Agency Trade Association] has asked Lisa to come forward with whatever evidence she possess or has been provided that lend credence to her claim, thus far I am unaware this has been provided.
Lisa Ann has stated that she offered to buy Alex Gonz a new test at TTS or CET and that
had he done this— this would have revealed the truth of the matter. This is incorrect as
until Monday of this week (Aug 12th) neither TTS nor CET provided Hep tests as part of
the standard panel.
The standard panel of test required by studios and APHSS currently includes – HIV by Aptima, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis by RPR and Trep Sure (not always both). On Monday of this week (Aug 12th) and as a result of communication between LATATA and TTS as a result of this allegation, TTS agreed to reinstate their complementary testing of Hep B and C through the remainder of August. This is tremendously helpful.
The scene for which Lisa Ann was cast with Alex Gonz was not booked by Direct Models. That same studio has apparently shot Alex Gonz many times in the previous months and Lisa Ann states she knows that he shot two gang bang scenes and one orgy scene for that studio included among those scenes. None of those scenes were booked by Direct Models.
Perhaps Lisa Ann might ask that same studio that employs her and Alex both— why they accept a LabCorp test, for their scenes? The answer is because it contain all of the industries required tests and fits within the industries or studios required time frame of acceptance— i.e not older than 30 days.
That studio does not require talent to have an APHSS green light for working for them, they require that talent bring a clean test with required test results and that the test not be older than 30 days. Does Lisa Ann believe they are at fault for this policy? Why then is she willing to work for them?
Or only that Direct Models is at fault—on a shoot that Direct Models did not book?
It begins to get farcical so I will finish. I will finish with a few questions of my own.
With no reliable evidence to support the question(s) below and so with only the ‘word on
the street’ to go by, which is the same credence from which Lisa Ann make her allegation,
Unless she is privy to information withheld from us that would assist to answer her
“With that precursor, and so clearly stated, I pose the following questions. I have been informed that Alex Gonz took a test at CET testing facility in June during the time when both CET and TTS were performing hepatitis tests for no additional charge along with the adult industries regular panel.
a. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
b. Lawfully no one in possession of these results may reveal them to anyone else, unless
the patient has given permission for that.
c. Was the result of that test positive for Hep C?
d. Is that why APHSS marked him as unavailable even though he had good test results for
the standard adult industry panel through LabCorp?
e. It would certainly be revealing to know all or part of that.
f. Could that be the reason Alex chose to test at LabCorp where he could chose
specifically what tests to take and therefore choose not take a hep test?
These are the questions that if answered may lead us to the truth.
Direct Models is certainly interested to learn the truth and if a loophole in the industries testing procedures has been found, to assist in an effort to close it.
If anyone is able to assist in answering them – please write me at: [email protected]models.com.
Lisa Ann seems to back down
In his statement above, Derek Hay was essentially calling “bullshit” on Lisa Ann calling bullshit. Hay offered some very sharp, factual points that stood in stark contrast to Lisa Ann’s more “I have no evidence but I have common sense” type statements. Perhaps under the weight of Hay’s response, Lisa Ann issued the following statement which struck a much less aggressive stance…
I am not on trial here.
I’m trying to keep the business safe and regulated,” she said. “And I saw something that I noticed was questionable and wanted to bring light to it, so hopefully things will be more effective and people will be more concerned about the right paperwork. And hopefully we can all agree about what the right tests are that we should all be going by.”
What’s good is everyone has been retesting. The positive here is that talent has been more proactive with testing and being more aware and checking their co-stars’ tests and the whole system is going to be more effective now.
But what about Alex Gonz?
Through all of this, we never heard from Alex Gonz. And, to be fair, Gonz shouldn’t have to respond. Just as Lisa Ann announced that she was “not on trial”, neither was Alex Gonz. At no point in any of this was anyone able to prove that he had ever tested positive for hepatitis C, or any other STD for that matter. Additionally, while some of his actions may have been questionable, they were not illegal or even against policy. Despite all of what Lisa Ann had to say, she never was able to prove any of what she was claiming.
At some point, Alex Gonz will have to do something. Obviously, no one is going to hire him or work with him unless he is able to come forward with a clean hepatitis C test and from one of the clinics that are considered to be industry standard. If he’s not able to do that, it’s unlikely we’ll ever see him in another porn film again. If he does come forward with a clean test, people will automatically begin asking some serious questions about the legitimacy of Lisa Ann’s claims.
