Journey Into Mystery #655 to be the last issue of the series
It had been rumored for a few days, but now it’s been confirmed; Marvel Comics is cancelling Journey Into Mystery. August’s issue #655 will be its last. Originally launched as a horror anthology way back in 1952, Journey Into Mystery has changed focus over the years. Most recently, the series has told the adventures of Sif, the badass Asgardian goddess. Now that it’s been confirmed as being cancelled, there’s quite a few disappointed Journey Into Mystery fans.
People first began buzzing about the possibility of Marvel cancelling Journey Into Mystery a few days ago when the September comic book solicitations were released. Journey Into Mystery was not included in the September Marvel Comics solicitations, usually a sure sign that a book has gotten the axe. However, some held out hope that maybe it was an oversight or that the book would be skipping a month and Marvel hadn’t issued any kind of formal statement.
However, two days ago, Journey Into Mystery writer Kathryn Immonen made it official; the series is coming to an end. On her Tumblr blog, she was asked if Journey Into Mystery being left off the September solicits was a mistake. This was her response…
Alas no. We are done with 655. But seeing as we were basically cooked right out of the gate, I’m going to call hanging in for nearly a year a success. To be truthful, the real challenge that we inherited with this book was living up to the beautiful work that Kieron et al had done previously and the amazing reader energy that had been generated.
If all that had happened with our ten issues was to extend the influence of the astonishing Valerio Schiti, that would have been enough. As it is, I’m so proud of what Valerio, Jordie, Clayton, Pepe and I put on the page under Lauren and Jake’s fearless leadership. I’m also thrilled to have been able to write Sif as a fierce warrior and a lovable dork. I hope she finds a new home somewhere with a lot of things to say and a lot of things to kill.
Thanks for reading.
So…that’s that, then. One of the most stories comic book series in the history of Marvel Comics is coming to an end. Of course, it’s always possible that the series could be relaunched at some point down the line, with a shiny new issue #1. Still, it’s a bit depressing to see it go.
As more news becomes available on which – if any – comic book series Sif will move into now that Journey Into Mystery is cancelled, I’ll be sure to pass it along.
What are your thoughts on the cancellation of Journey Into Mystery?
