A look at Jessica Nirgri’s Emerald City Comic Con costumes
Jessica Nigri is one of the world’s most popular cosplayers. A geek-girl with professional model looks, Nigri has built a reputation – and a career – on cosplaying all across the United States. The characters that inspire her costumes range from the pages of comic books, to anime, to video games. So, with all that being said, her appearance at the 2013 Emerald City Comic Convention in Seattle last weekend certainly captured a lot of attention.
The Emerald City Comic Con spanned the course of three days and Jessica Nigri showed up with two costumes. On the first day of ECCC, she was sporting a feathery, pink, original costume that was meant to help raise awareness for breast cancer. For her second costume, Nigri went a little more hardcore and brought out her custom-made LT3 “uniform”. LT3, for those that may be unaware, is an all-girl professional cosplay and gaming team and stands for “Less Than 3.”
As you may recall from a few months ago, there was all sorts of fuss made over “real geek girls” vs “fake geek girls”. Apparently there are a large number of “enlightened” people who believe that most female cosplayers do so simply for the attention, are not “authentic” geeks, and have no place at comic cons. Or, really, anywhere else in the geek ecosystem. As I’ve said before, these people are idiots of the highest order. I bring this up because I think that, along with all the other female cosplayers out there, Jessica Nigri is doing a fantastic job at not only proudly representing geeks of all genders, but also attracting new fans into the fold.
Comic Convention Season (yes, there is such a thing) is just getting started here in the United States. Over the next several months, expect to be seeing and hearing a lot more of Jessica Nigri. The San Diego Comic Con will no doubt be her most anticipated appearance. As more Jessica Nigri pictures and news becomes available, I will of course pass it along. In the meantime, take a few moments to share your thoughts in the comments below.
