FBI arrests “Revenge Porn King” Hunter Moore on hacking charges
Hunter Moore has been arrested by the FBI. Moore is best known as the founder of IsAnyoneUp.com, one of the Internet’s first and most successful “revenge porn” sites. He and another person – Charles “Gary” Evens – were arrested by the FBI after a federal grand jury indicted the pair on 15 counts of conspiracy and email hacking. If convicted on all counts, Hunter Moore could be looking at up to five years in prison.
To quote from the story appearing over at the NY Daily News…
Moore, 27, and his accused hacker, Charles “Gary” Evens, 25, were charged Thursday with conspiracy, seven counts of unauthorized access to a protected computer, and seven counts of aggravated identity theft.
According to the 15-count indictment filed in California, Moore’s website, isanyoneup.com, showcased nude photos taken from Yahoo and Gmail email addresses Evens hacked into for a fee.
Evens “would gain unauthorized access to the email accounts of hundreds of victims by various means, including ‘hacking’ into the victims’ accounts, and obtain information, including nude pictures, belonging to the victims and stored on the victims’ accounts,” according to the court document.
According to the indictment, Hunter Moore originally contacted Gary Evens back in October 2011 and offered to pay him $200 a week to hack into email accounts and gather naked pictures. At first, Evens responded to Moore that what he was asking was illegal. However, Moore advised him to setup an anonymous PayPal account to receive payment and help keep the financial transaction a secret. That was seemingly enough to convince Evens to begin working for Moore and he ended up stealing hundreds of nude pictures of various people, passing them off to Hunter Moore who then posted them to IsAnyoneUp.com.
Who is Hunter Moore?
After posting thousands of nude pictures that were usually uploaded without consent from the person appearing in the photo, Hunter Moore found himself the target of all sorts of lawsuits and personal threats. With pressure mounting, Moore decided to shutdown IsAnyoneUp.com in April 2012.
For his part, Hunter Moore remains unapologetic for his part in helping to pioneer the concept of Revenge Porn. It will be interesting to see if that changes now that he’s looking at possible doing up to five years in Federal prison.
The arrest of Hunter Moore and Gary Evens comes as legislatures around the country are passing laws that make revenge porn illegal. This, combined with the apparent downfall of its “king”, will hopefully see revenge porn start to fade away.
As more information becomes available regarding the fate of Hunter Moore, I’ll be sure to pass it along.
