Amanda Blest - Scranton based singing hippie bad ass

I live just outside Scranton, Pennsylvania.  And, with the exception of the time that I spent in the Army, I’ve lived in the Northeast Pennsylvania area for my entire life.  I mention this because even though I consider Scranton my home town, it took a friend visiting from out West to tell me about Amanda Blest.  We were at a bar one night, catching up, and he had asked me if I had ever heard of her or heard her sing.  “Nope.  Name doesn’t sound familiar,” I told him.  He then proceeded to tell me that I was missing out and that he had head her perform not too long ago and was blown away by how amazing she was.  So, on his recommendation, I took to Youtube and found some examples of her work.

Wow.  That was my first impression of Amanda Blest as I listened to her belt out an acoustic version of Sublime’s What I Got.  I continued to play several other Amanda Blest videos and was impressed by each one.  So much so, in fact, that I wanted to take a few moments to share them here.  Take a few minutes of your time and take a look/listen.  I think you’ll find it a valuable use of your time.

Amanda Blest – What I Got (Sublime Cover)

Amanda Blest – I Was Your Prey

Amanda Blest – Worst Behavior

Amanda Blest – Zombies (Cranberries Cover)

Pretty good, eh?  Hopefully, one of these days, I’ll get a chance to catch her and her band playing somewhere around here.  And if you happen to find yourself in the Scranton area, hopefully you’ll get the opportunity to hear Amanda Blest perform live, too. If not, no worries, you can subscribe to her Youtube channel and, while you’re at it, follow her on Twitter (@AmandaBlest).  Additionally, you can hear a bunch of her work over on SoundCloud.  So what did you all think?  Let us know in the comments below.  Or, alternatively, be an anti-social asshole and leave without saying anything.
