Extended Avengers Superbowl Trailer

The Avengers Superbowl Trailer

The Avengers Superbowl trailer was one of the most anticipated commercials of the game.  As it only ran once during the game, many of you may have missed it (assuming you even watched the Superbowl to begin with) and, lucky for you, Marvel Comics has released not just the original TV spot, but an extended commercial.  This extended trailer has a bit more footage, including a conversation at the end between Tony Stark and Loki.  And in terms of giving us a glimpse of the upcoming movie, The Avengers Superbowl trailer gives us our best insight yet into the film.

One of the biggest reveals of the Avengers Superbowl trailer takes place at exactly thirty seconds into the ad, where a group of what appear to be frost giants are jumping into the streets of Manhattan.  The scene is only a few seconds in length, but it gives us our best look (but still blurry) yet at the enemies the Avengers will be facing.  And, because I’m nice, I managed to take a screen capture of what I’m talking about, saving you the hassle…

What are these mysterious enemies in the Avengers Superbowl trailer?

Now, I said above that these things look like Frost Giants.  However, thanks to some spot on detective work over at Bleeding Cool, it would seem that these things aren’t the same enemies that we saw in Thor.  No, it would appear that Joss Whedon has taken a page out of an old Walt Simonson run on Thor and brought in the forces of Muspell, creatures that hail from the realm of Muspelheim (the realm of fire in Norse mythology).  In fact, the screenshot above appears to be modeled almost entirely after this page from the Walt Simonson comic…

Avengers Superbowl Trailer - Sons of Muspell

In the Simonson issue of Thor, the sons of Muspel use a portal, which is centered at the top of the Empire State building, to enter our world.  Only the combined might of The Avengers and Fantastic Four is able to stop the onslaught.  And since Marvel Studios only owns the rights to The Avengers, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will have to fight this battle by themselves.  Is the similarities between this comic and the footage from the Avengers Superbowl trailer a coincidence?  Possibly, but if it is, it’s a pretty strong coincidence.

So what are your thoughts on The Avengers Superbowl trailer and the upcoming Avengers movie?  Based on this new ad, are you any more hyped to see it when The Avengers hits theaters in May?  Let us know in the comments.

It’s probably a good thing The Avengers won’t be teaming up with the Fantastic Four in the movie. Chris Evans might start getting a big head.
