In what is arguably his most anticipated mix tape release so far, Andrew “Drew Breeze” Merwine has made “Back to Backpack” available for free download.  His third album, Back to Backpack is a twelve track tour de force that should give his fans, critics, and new listeners reason to stop and take notice.  The album is, in my opinion, his most sophisticated and powerful work to date, demonstrating his evolution as a rapper and his continued rise as one of the most talented musicians in the Northeast.  If you haven’t downloaded and listened to Drew Breeze’s Back to Backpack yet, you are wrong and you owe it to yourself to correct that oversight.

To quote from the “Please Read!” text file that accompanies the download, here’s a message from the man himself…

“I’m actually drinking a little as I type this out for all you guys so maybe my mind isn’t where it should be when you’re releasing the most self important tape of your ‘career’.  I love every single person that has showed me support from day one.  The fact of the matter is I’ve been doing this shit since I was 14 but just got the balls less than a year ago to come out in the public eye with it and release some tapes.  In that time life has almost flipped upside down, people that never wanted to speak to me before now do and women that used to not want to have sex with me now do.  I’m not saying I’m living any kind of a dream but trust me this is not how it was when I was roaming the halls of Valley View High school having Third Bridge Anthem lyrics shouted at me.  Weird.  Regardless, I consider you all friends, family, and loved ones.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

As for the music, as I mentioned, Back to Backpack contains twelve tracks, those being…

1. Writers Block
2. One Whisper
3. Didn’t Realize ft. Joey Plague
4. Not Even Rain
5. Hustle Hard
6. Won’t Stop
7. Fly Boyz ft. Yung C & Focus
8. In My Veins
9. All Of The Lights
10. Even If I Leave ft. Focus
11. Learn My Name
12. Outro

As I’ve only listened to Back to Backpack once (it’s playing a second time as I write this), so far, I won’t attempt anything approaching a “review” of the album.  I will say, though, that from cover to cover, Back to Backpack is an absolutely enjoyable album.  I said that, in my opinion, this is Drew Breeze’s best work to date and I stand by that statement.  Talent like the type that Drew Breeze is working with doesn’t come along all that often and when it does, most people don’t take notice until the person has a Top 10 Billboard record and a big time record contract.  While he hasn’t hit that level of success, yet, Breeze is absolutely that caliber of talent.  Back to Backpack is a really great album, containing a dozen high quality, well-worth-your-time tracks.  And it’s free to download.  So why don’t you have it in your playlist yet?
