DOOM 3 BFG EDITION SUPPORTS HEAD MOUNTED DISPLAYS

Id Software has announced a definitive edition of Doom 3. In it, you’ll get Dooms 1-3, Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, and the ‘Lost Mission’. All Doom 3 content will be remastered, optimized for 3D displays.

The most interesting part of this release is the support for Head Mounted Displays (HMDs). According to an article on TheVerge, developer John Carmack has wanted to implement immersive virtual reality for some time, but it’s only become plausible and affordable with recent advancements in technology. Carmack’s HMD rig uses the controller for most movement, with refined aiming by tilting one’s head.

The Doom 3 BFG Edition will act as a precursor to Doom 4, which was announced back in 2008. Id Software has yet to announce an exact release date or pricing.

You can check out the trailer at the official Doom Youtube channel. I’ll be looking forward to demon blood spatter on my virtual eyes once this drops. Hopefully, the HMD technology can secure a foothold in the gaming market, and not fall into disuse and obscurity like Nintendo’s ill-fated Virtual Boy or the more recent gimmickdom of the Playstation Move or Xbox Kinect.

Gruesome, I’d say.
