What is DC’s “Trinity War”?

On May 5th, we’ll probably learn a lot more about the DC Comics Trinity War.  On that Day, which is Free Comic Book Day, DC’s free comic will preview an upcoming event that is currently known only as The Trinity War.  Based on this preview, which comes in the form of a massive foldout, it would appear that The Trinity War will feature the heroes of the DC Universe battling against each other.  The only other official details so far revealed about the Trinity War is that it will take place sometime in 2013.

DC Comics has yet to release anything official on The Trinity War.  The only reason we know about it is because the Bleeding Cool website got their hands on some of DC’s Free Comic Book Day pictures of the gate fold preview.  Bleeding Cool then posted this image (click for larger version)…

So what’s going on that image?  Well, not that you can’t see for yourself, but it would appear that it would involve a whole mess of the most powerful heroes DC Comics has to offer battling the shit out of each other.  Superman battling an oddly-costumed Green Lantern, Wonder Woman vs Aquaman, Green Arrow vs Hawkman, Batman vs The Atom.  And so on.  And, yes, I already know what you’re thinking (because I’m thinking it too…); This is the DC Comics version of Avengers vs X-Men.

But maybe not.  Again, based on some speculation originally posted on Bleeding Cool that has now been widely distributed, there may be more to this image than meets the eye.  According to commentary from various people who’ve read some of DC’s Free Comic Book Day offerings…

[The Trinity War] has probably something to do with the Trinity of Evil which gets introduced in DC’s FCBD comic. Pandora is one of the Trinity.”

“It appears to be the 3 original sinners, of which Pandora has already been disclosed. Let me just say that the identities of the other 2 will surprise and amaze you.”

“I read the FCBD issue from DC last night. Trinity War probably has to do with the three sinners of the DC New. One is Pandora, the other is the [REDACTED], and weirdly the last one is the [REDACTED]. That’s right. [REDACTED] is somehow magic based now. Also, they are punished by the seven gods who gave Shazam his power.”

“In it, there is a group referred to as the “Trinity of Sin.” This group includes Pandora,[REDACTED], and [REDACTED] (I have no idea why). The Rock of Eternity, a council of powerful wizards (thanks, Geoff Johns), sentences them to [REDACTED]. This may have something do with DC’s Trinity War, but I’m not sure. Maybe Pandora, [REDACTED], and [REDACTED] versus Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman? Who knows?”

So it would appear that Pandora plays a very key role in all of this, at least based upon the speculation of people who’ve claimed to have already read the free DC Comics stuff.  Truth to any of it?  Maybe, but 2013 is still a long ways away and its fair to say that its probably still to early to be jumping to partially-informed conclusions.  As more information is released about The Trinity War, I’ll be sure to keep everyone up to speed.  Until then, feel free to share your thoughts on The Trinity War and what we think we might know about it in the comments below.
