Identity of Gay DC Character Leaked

Ever since DC announced several days ago that it would be re-introducing one of its “iconic” comic characters as being gay, it’s pretty much been the talk of the comic industry.  As you can imagine, reaction has ranged from celebration to seething hatred and everything in between.  Now, there are reports of a senior DC Comics insider leaking the identity of this character.  If you’d rather not have it spoiled, you should probably stop reading now.

Bleeding Cool, which has a pretty solid track record of getting these things right, is reporting that Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, will be revealed to be gay.  If true, this would represent one of the most high-profile homosexual comic book characters of all time.  Which, all things considered, really isn’t saying all that much.  At any rate, it’s a safe bet that Alan Scott/Green Lantern is about to become a very high profile character, and not just to comic fans.  Expect the mainstream media to jump all over this with headlines like, “Green Lantern is Gay!”

Alan Scott - Earth 2 Green Lantern

It’s worth pointing out that Alan Scott is currently a part of DC’s Earth 2 continuity, which means he won’t be interacting with the core DC characters.  At least not right away.  However, seeing as how Power Girl and Huntress have both transitioned from Earth 2 to the New 52 DC, it is possible that the Alan Scott Green Lantern will at some point make that same cross-over.  So far, Alan Scott really hasn’t been given all that much spotlight in even the Earth 2 universe, appearing only briefly in the first issue.  Again, expect that to change going forward, with the big reveal possibly being included in the second issue of Earth 2, which goes on sale June 6th.

DC Comics hasn’t yet officially confirmed that Alan Scott will be its “iconic” gay character, but it does make a lot of sense.  Once DC make it official (assuming its true…), I’ll be sure to post the update.  Until then, feel free to share your thoughts on this in the comments below.
